About Markus Field

Markus Field is a time-served carpenter and joiner who spent twenty-four years on UK sites — six of them as a sole trader, eleven running a small building contractor with a team of nine — before turning to writing and coaching full time. He writes everything on this site himself.

The short version

From apprentice chippy to a nine-strong firm

Marcus left school at sixteen for a four-year carpentry and joinery apprenticeship with a family building firm in Rotherham, finishing his NVQ Level 3 at nineteen and getting his CSCS card the same summer. He spent the next six years as an employed chippy on housing developments and shopfitting jobs across South Yorkshire and the East Midlands, mostly first and second fix, kitchens and staircases.

At twenty-six he went out on his own with a second-hand van and no idea what an hour of his time cost. He was busy from the first month and skint by the ninth — quoting off what the last bloke charged, taking no deposits, and paying merchant bills out of the next job's money. Working out his true hourly rate on the back of a delivery note was the moment the business changed, and it is the reason the first calculator on this site is that one.

By his mid-thirties he had turned the sole trade into a limited building contractor doing extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments, with two carpenters, a labourer, an apprentice and a regular bench of subcontracted electricians, plumbers and plasterers. Peak turnover was a little over £1.1m a year. He learned employment status the hard way, learned staged payments the harder way, and learned that a 13-week cash forecast is worth more than a full diary.

He handed the contracting side to his site manager in 2021 and now writes, teaches and mentors full time. He still keeps his hand in: a handful of joinery jobs a year for old customers, mainly because he does not trust anyone writing about pricing who has not priced a job recently.

Marcus lives in Sheffield with his wife Rachel, an ex-practice manager who did the firm's books for nine years and who still reads his money guides before they go out. He is a Sheffield Wednesday season-ticket holder, which he describes as the only unprofitable commitment he has never been able to price properly.

What he does now

Writing, building tools and mentoring

  • Writes the guidance

Every guide, hub page and trade-specific walkthrough on this site is written by Marcus, with statutory figures checked against HMRC and legislation on the page where they appear.

  • Builds the calculators

He specifies the arithmetic behind each tool from the way jobs are actually priced on site, and insists every output shows its working so you can argue with it.

  • Mentors trade owners one to one

A small number of monthly sessions with owners moving from sole trader to employer: pricing, cash, hiring and the paperwork that has to exist before either.

  • Reviews the templates

Quotes, terms, deposit schedules and chase sequences are the ones he used in his own firm, stripped of anything that only worked for him.

How the guidance is checked

Experience is the starting point, not the proof

  • Cited primary sources

Legislation, HMRC and government guidance, regulators and provider terms — linked on the page where the claim is made.

  • Calculators that show their working

Every tool displays the arithmetic behind its output, so you can check the logic against your own figures.

  • Named professional reviewers

Where a qualified professional has reviewed a subject they are named. Where none has, the page says so.

How Marcus writes

  • Plain UK English, site-and-van language, no corporate filler.
  • Numbers before opinions: show the arithmetic, then the judgement.
  • Never shames the reader for underpricing or messy paperwork — he did both.
  • Says plainly when something is a matter for an accountant, solicitor or insurer.

Hard limits

  • Marcus is a tradesman and business owner, not a regulated adviser — nothing here is personalised tax, legal or financial advice.
  • No invented statistics, testimonials, star ratings or awards.
  • No claim that a price will be accepted, an application will succeed, or a reward will be paid.
  • Where a subject needs a professional sign-off he has not got, the page says so.
